Who is Ryan Bethencourt?

Ryan Bethencourt is an author, biotech investor and founder who writes about decentralized systems and applied frontier technologies. He wrote The Decentralized Revolution Series, five narrative histories of Zcash, Bittensor, Solana, NFTs and memecoins published from 2025 to 2026. He co-founded IndieBio, co-founded and led Wild Earth as CEO, and has backed 180+ early-stage biotech, food-tech and longevity companies.

Biography

Ryan Bethencourt works where biology, computing and open networks meet. He is the author of The Decentralized Revolution Series, narrative histories of the technologies rebuilding money, art and intelligence on public blockchains: ZERO on Zcash, zero-knowledge proofs and the cypherpunks; TAO on Bittensor and decentralized AI; LIGHT on Solana; PUNKS on NFTs, CryptoPunks, crypto art and on-chain generative art; and DOGE on memecoins, from Dogecoin and Shiba Inu to BONK, Pump.fun and AI-agent coins. A sixth book, HYPE: How DeFi Built the Everything Market, is coming soon.

Every book in the series is published under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 license (CC BY-SA 4.0), so readers can quote and share them with attribution. That is why Grey Area Labs can publish long excerpts from them free.

Before he wrote about decentralized systems, Ryan spent more than a decade building and funding companies at the frontier of biology and technology. He co-founded IndieBio, the world’s largest seed-stage biotech accelerator and part of SOSV, where he served as program director and helped launch more than 100 companies working on everything from cultured meat to computational drug discovery. He co-founded Wild Earth and led it as CEO, building one of the first biotech-driven pet nutrition companies, backed by Mark Cuban on Shark Tank. He also co-founded Berkeley Biolabs and Counter Culture Labs, and served as Head of Life Sciences at XPRIZE.

As an investor, Ryan has backed 180+ early-stage biotech, food-tech and longevity companies, including early positions in Upside Foods, Geltor, The Not Company and Shiok Meats. His portfolio companies have gone on to raise billions in follow-on capital. His work has been featured in Wired, TechCrunch and Forbes.

He holds a BSc in Molecular Genetics from the University of Warwick and a joint MBE (Bioscience Enterprise) from Cambridge and MIT. He began doctoral research in regenerative medicine at the University of Edinburgh, then chose to build companies instead.

Today Ryan writes Accelerated, a weekly newsletter on longevity science, AI and frontier technology, and runs Grey Area Labs. There he publishes research-backed analysis on decentralized systems, privacy cryptography, decentralized AI, NFTs and on-chain art, memecoins, longevity science, peptides and AI for drug discovery.

In decentralized systems

  • Active in the Solana community since 2021. He has attended every Breakpoint, Solana’s annual conference, since the first one in Lisbon in November 2021.
  • Co-founder of the Solana Historical Society, which documents the earliest Solana NFT collections from on-chain data. The Society’s site lists its founders as Timon “The OG” and infinitegames, Ryan’s handle.
  • Collector on Ethereum in 2021 (CrypToadz and OnChainMonkey) before gas fees sent him to Solana, where he moved from profile pictures into digital fine art and on-chain generative art.
  • Early investor in Exchange Art, a Solana fine-art gallery and auction house that closed in the summer of 2026.
  • Memecoin trader since the first Solana Summer of 2021. He held through the 2022 winter and received the BONK airdrop at Christmas 2022, as the Author’s Note in DOGE recounts.
  • Member of the Zcash community since mid-2025.

Areas of expertise

Six subjects run through Ryan’s books and his writing on Grey Area Labs. Each section below links to the best place to start.

Decentralized systems and privacy cryptography

The first book in the series, ZERO, follows private digital money from the cypherpunks and David Chaum’s DigiCash to Zcash, whose shielded transactions use zero-knowledge proofs to hide the sender, the receiver and the amount while the network still verifies that no money was created from nothing. The second edition, published in October 2026, carries the story to Grayscale’s Zcash ETF, which began trading on NYSE Arca on August 25, 2026. Ryan joined the Zcash community in mid-2025.

NFTs and on-chain art

PUNKS tells both halves of the NFT story: Ethereum’s canon, from CryptoPunks and Beeple to Art Blocks, and Solana’s renaissance, from its first collections of 2021 to fine art and on-chain generative art. Ryan watched founders and investors on his feed switch to pixel faces in the spring of 2021, collected on Ethereum, then moved to Solana, where he co-founded the Solana Historical Society to keep that history on the record.

Memecoins and internet culture

DOGE follows the memecoin from a December 2013 joke to Shiba Inu, BONK’s Christmas 2022 airdrop, Pump.fun and a president’s coin, and asks the questions the hype skips: who made the money, and who lost it. Ryan has traded memecoins since the first Solana Summer of 2021, and he writes about them as a case study in hypercompetition and attention, not as trading tips.

Decentralized AI

TAO tells the story of Bittensor, an open network that pays contributors in its TAO token for machine-learning work. It runs from the network’s January 2021 launch through its subnets, the Dynamic TAO upgrade of February 2025 and decentralized training runs such as Covenant-72B, completed in March 2026. Its question is whether open, incentive-driven networks can compete with closed AI labs.

High-performance blockchains

LIGHT is the story of Solana and its co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko, a former Qualcomm engineer whose Proof of History gives the network a cryptographic clock that orders transactions before validators vote on them. It follows Solana from the 2017 whitepaper through the outages, the collapse of FTX in November 2022 and the recovery, to the Firedancer validator client. Ryan has been part of the Solana community since 2021.

Biotech, longevity and applied frontier technologies

This is where Ryan’s career began: IndieBio, Wild Earth and 180+ early-stage investments in biotech, food tech and longevity. On Grey Area Labs he writes evidence reviews on aging biology and longevity science, and analysis of how AI is changing drug discovery, with health content grounded in peer-reviewed research and kept separate from medical advice. The Triple Convergence sets out where he sees AI, crypto and biotech meeting.

Writing with AI

Ryan writes with AI and says so in every book. The series began as an experiment: he wanted to read a narrative history of Zcash, found that it did not exist, and, having explored frontier AI models for coding, drug development and creative writing, set out to co-write it. Each book in The Decentralized Revolution Series discloses that it was co-written with AI.

The two newest books, PUNKS and DOGE, name the collaborator in their Author’s Notes. Their research, writing and fact-checking were done with Anthropic’s Claude (the Opus 5.5 model), which led teams of research, writing and fact-checking agents, while Ryan directed the project and reviewed the work. For PUNKS, the research agents went to the primary record wherever they could: on-chain data, archived web pages, court records and published interviews.

Where my memory and the chain disagreed, the chain won.
